Watchmen is pretty much required reading. I've heard great things about FINAL CRISIS, by Grant Morrison, J. G. Jones, Carlos Pacheco and Doug Mahnke. I'm personally a fan of Batman; The Killing Joke by Alan Moore, who does a lot of great stuff, goes into the Joker's origins. X-Men is awesome too; Chris Claremont is like their best writer.
