Like a Weed : A coming of age story of a Hungarian girl through WWII and the post war years as a Displaced Person

Picture a little girl in a field of tall grass and wild flowers, her little dog by her side, her body warmed by the mellow sun. Little Vivi is four years old in the picture of the cover. The world is still safe. She's in the garden of her grandparents' villa on the outskirts of Budapest, Hungary, the only home she's ever known, among loving people, her mother, her best friend, her nanny, her uncle. The first of September 1939 she enters first grade almost at the same instant the German Army invades the not too distant Poland. Unbeknownst to her life is changed forever. World War II has begun. At first slowly, almost imperceptably, life begins to change; then come bombings, German occupation and another threat, that of the Soviet Army approaching the eastern border. In the Fall of 1944 her mother and stepfather and the little girl leave the capitol for another city only to encounter more severe bombings, a reign of terror and human suffering while life in a surreal way still goes on and children manage to find fun in spite of it all.

The three flee the country to Austria. At last the war is over. Yet years of uncertainty await them. Not until March of 1950 when they arrive in the United States do they find what is considered a normal life.

But it isn't all gloom and doom. Amusing situations, pleasurable times happen even in the harshest times. Time marches on and the little girl is growing up. She learns languages, reads a lot of books, and discovers boys.

Visualized through the eyes of a budding teenager, who is young, resilient and ready to embrace the future, life is exciting yet tinged with bouts of fear. An excellent collection of photos capture the years of luxury to the enduring travails of a DP camp in Austria.

LIKE A WEED is an absorbing remembrance told with subtle and eduring charm...and it has a happy ending.

In thi lifetime you have been one of the very few women I admired and one of the VERY few that understood how I think. I still remember meeting and you were a beacon of intelligence and understanding of human nature. I'm so glad I have your memoir, I only wish, I had understood everything about you as a little girl and how it created your presence as a woman in growth and transition. I think we were born from the same tribe and have descended from the same woman in thought.

To "...a darling clever little thing..." (page 7 of Like a Weed) It's a delight...my senses are filled with the perfume of the flowers; I hear the rustling of the multi-colored leaves of an Automn in Huvosvolgy. Thank you. Congratulations! It is good you wrote it all down...for us who were there...and the ones who are here.

I read Like a Weed cover to cover in an afternoon and early evening. I was totally enchanted and captivated byevery word. There is not a hint of sentimentality or syrupy sweetness in it and yet it is tender, touching and completely hones.
