Author Biography

Sue Grafton, 1940 - Author Sue Grafton was born on April 24, 1940 in Louisville, Kentucky. She graduated from the University of Louisville in 1961 with a B.A. in English Literature. She is the daughter of the late C. W. Grafton, a Kentucky municipal bond attorney who wrote mysteries is his spare time, and the granddaughter of Presbyterian missionaries. She has three children from her first two marriages and grandchildren, including one named Kinsey. Grafton is the author of the Kinsey Millhone alphabet mystery series that range from the letters A to O, to date. She wrote her first novel at the age of twenty-two, but it never was released. While working days as a medical secretary, Grafton spent her nights, after the kids went to sleep, writing her first novels "Keziah Dane" (1967) ad "The Lolly-Madona War" (1969). Her career took off when "A Is for Alibi" was published in 1982 and received the Mysterious Stranger Award. Afterwards, it was followed by "B Is for Burglar" (1985), which won the Shamus and Anthony Awards, and "C Is for Corpse" (1986), which also won the Anthony Award. Grafton has also spent over fifteen years writing television and movie screenplays and has collaborated with third husband, Steven F. Humphrey, on such works as the Agatha Christie adaptations "A Caribbean Mystery" and "Sparkling Cyanide."
