Dr. Ian Grayson doesn't know who he can trust. The pursuit to steal an artifact discovered by the archaeologist began in Belize without slowing down. Ian's instincts lead him to hitch a ride with trucker Mackenzie Wallace.

Mac knows he's not being told everything, but his gut won't allow him to turn Ian away. The longer the spend time together, the more Mac is sure he wants to help Ian, and the more Ian falls for Mac.

Two men, one long trip to Chicago, and villains in hot pursuit make Stevie Woods' The Hitch Hiker a fantastic story that explodes off the pages. There's action, suspense, and sexual tension thick enough to cut with a knife. While the attraction between Ian and Mac is instantaneous, their bed play is not. I enjoyed the tease of their situation, and found that it added just the right amount of eroticism to the tale.

Ian had some rough patches in his life but didn't allow the hard knocks to hold him down. Mac has a background that didn't shock me, but when it was introduced made me think the pursuers were in for a run for their money. I loved the secondary characters. Their introduction at key moments added a splash of charm to the pages, and then their graceful exits made me hope a story was in their imminent future.

Ms. Woods has begun the series with a riveting story, and has me anxious to read the next installment. Pick up a copy and enjoy.

The starting point of this novel could have been good material for a suspence/thriller one (I don't know, probably Spielberg left me with that idea when there is a truck and an highway...), and instead the output is almost a light comedy. Ian is an anthropologist /archaeologist who is trying to reach home-plate running away from his enemies: he has an artefact the evil men want and he is not ready to let it go. Without money and not trusting the police, Ian is hitchhiking from South America to Chicago and more or less near Austin he asks a lift to Mac, an older but still handsome trucker whose truck is like a little home on wheels, double bed and all.

Archaeologist Ian Grayson is desperate to get home to Chicago with the artifact he found in Central America. Ian is being chased by dangerous people who are intent on stealing the treasure. However, things take a turn for the better when Ian meets Over-the-road driver Mackenzie Wallace in a San Marcos truck stop. Not only does Mac give Ian a ride north, he becomes Ian’s protector and lover.

The Hitchhiker is the first book in the Tomcat series. This is a well written captivating plot of modern day treasure hunting. The setting is a road trip from Texas to Illinois, interwoven with cultural history surrounding the artifact. The characters are developed, highlighting the personality traits of the main characters as well as the main perpetrators. Ian is an honest, intelligent man with a natural talent for his chosen profession. His motivation for treasure hunting is academic, rather than greed, along with restoring creditability to his family’s name. Because of these views, Ian became the target for betrayal. Upon meeting, Ian is immediately attracted to Mac, although he is cautious about revealing his sexual desires. In a very short time, Ian grows to love Mac. More than just a truck driver, Mac is a former naval pilot. He has good instincts when it comes to sizing up people and potentially dangerous situations. He is immediately drawn to Ian, who inspires Mac to want to protect him. Mac worries that Ian will reject the intimacy he desires, but Ian quickly reveals he too wants a relationship between them. Ian and Mac are well matched in their personalities and fit comfortably together.

The very talented Stevie Woods has created a most enjoyable beginning to this series. The storyline holds your interest. The characters are realistic and the love scenes are fantastic. I look forward to the next episode in this thrilling series.
