4.5 stars

Commander Taylor Sterling leads a group of scientists out to the known edge of space to collect astronomical data. His only other companion is his engineer Joel Campion, who is also his lover. What no one anticipates is the danger they’re all thrown in, and it seems all is lost in the space of moment with Taylor the only survivor. How will he survive?

Ms. Woods manages to inflect a tone and feel into A Million Pinpricks from the very first page that affected my overall enjoyment of this short story and I couldn’t stop turning the pages. I was instantly pulled into the plot of this futuristic tale and found myself sympathizing with Taylor and the challenges he faced. It was interesting to read how Taylor’s reminiscence of the trip that caused the injury and subsequent deaths of most of the people on board his spaceship is relayed with such a compelling and compassionate way and really pulls at your senses, especially when he’s recalling his lover Joel. What we do learn of these two is interesting and gives the reader hope and leaves the scenario open to all manner of possibilities. The sex between Taylor and Joel sensually depicts their emotional bond and demonstrates their strong characters. Poignant with a twist in the plot that may surprise readers A Million Pinpricks is a futuristic short story I thoroughly recommend to readers. Just be prepared to set aside some time one afternoon, as you’ll want to read this story in one sitting.

Taylor Sterling knows he does not have much longer before he dies. With his ship damaged beyond repair and no help in sight, he mourns the loss of his love Joel. He regrets never telling him that he loved him and can only pray that he knew the truth before he died.

Joel Campion is the engineer on board Taylor's ship. He agrees with Taylor that this mission is turning out to be dangerous. However, with everything turning downright nasty for them, he will do whatever it takes to save the man he loves.

Taylor and Joel argue with the scientist on board their ship. They are demanding Taylor move them closer to the phenomena that has appeared before them. When he finally agrees to do as they ask he knows they are in trouble but does not know how to save them. Facing a lonely death Taylor mourns Joel. However, will the figure in the doorway turn out to be more than a dream?

This is very sweet read. The emotions that Taylor goes through, reliving his moments with Joel are poignant. They draw the reader deeply into the story. Stevie Woods has managed to capture the depth of emotion that comes with losing a loved one. The story rounds out nicely with a brilliant conclusion. This is a book that should be bought and read many times over.

A Million Pinpricks is a heart-wrenching tale of self-discovery and the power of love. And perhaps, shows a few life lessons in there as well. Stevie Woods brings up a very human look at death: what do you do when you think you’re about to die? My brain puzzled over this as I watched Commander Taylor Sterling, our doomed hero as he struggles to accept death.

I enjoyed the seamless blend of past and present as Taylor remembers just how he ended up facing death in the first place and also, when he remembers Joel. Joel Campion, a vivid young man that I fell in love with as he and Taylor grow from friends to lovers. Their growing feelings are exquisitely detailed and only add to the steady pacing of the story as Stevie Woods presents a world that sees space exploration as the norm and where science just might in fact, doom us all.

The ending perfectly demonstrates the theory that love is undefeatable, and I applauded as the unbelievable happens and puts a cute touch to an already brilliant story. I more than enjoyed this tale but not only that, it left me thinking which I thoroughly approve of. A Million Pinpricks definitely left a lasting mark on me.
