This historical tells the story of Justin and Richard who have been friends for a few years. They are both in love with each other but daren't say anything in case their love isn't returned and also for fear of any repercussions. In desperation, Richard travelled abroad and returned married. This only reinforces Justin's idea that Richard is straight and so he resolves to keep his secret and just be Richard's friend. All that changes when Justin inadvertently lets his feelings slip.

I like historicals and this one was a good short read. The characterisation was done well, and I liked the slightly ambiguous ending over what would happen with Richard's wife. I'm giving it a 'Very Good' and I recommend it for anyone who likes historicals.

Smoke Screen is a short but interesting read. Most of the action takes place in flashback and fantasies as the two men consider their feelings for one another. This was a different style of writing but very effective. I liked how neither of them rushed to take control of the situation but behaved in a quiet and responsible manner suitable to the time. Though not completely historically accurate, I enjoyed the subtle shifts of power play and the resolution of the different plot threads. Smoke Screen is a nice, gently emotional novelette that makes you think.

This well written story was quite enjoyable and both characters were three dimensional. I can’t attest to the historical accuracy of the period, but I thought that the world building seemed authentic. The pacing moved the story along and Stevie Woods did a very good job on the prose and dialogue. Although Smoke Screen was not a laugh a minute, the dialogue was funny at times in a restrained British upper class fashion and it’s always amusing when ambitious mothers try to put their daughters forward when they smell a good catch.

If you’re looking for a short historical romance with two likable protagonists who are obviously in love with each other, and can’t wait to get between the sheets once they know the lay of the land, Smoke Screen should be on your list of books to buy. Definitely recommended.

Julian and Richard are best friends. But it’s only after Richard returns from a trip abroad with a dazzling wife that Julian realizes his true feelings. He’s in love with his best friend, and even though Julian realizes their friendship can’t go any further, he can’t stay away from Richard. There’s no holding back after an experience leaves them to realize their true feelings for one another. But what of Richard’s wife and the mystery that surrounds her?

Smoke Screen is an enjoyable book showing the love that’s discovered between two best friends, with some romance and a dash of mystery thrown into the plot to make for a satisfying read. Set against a Regency backdrop the story centers around the characters’ interaction with each other. Ms. Woods’ knowledge of the period is obvious and made me enjoy this story even though there was some license taken on the social mores of the time to make us understand Richard’s motives. Ms. Woods’ brings the reader to a more intimate understanding between these two interesting men and the situation they find themselves in. Their friendship and resultant love is romantically portrayed and realistic, and makes for some sensual sex between these two lovers. You can feel their strong attraction and commitment to each other. What I really enjoyed was the fact that although these were two worldly men there was still an innocence about them as they explored their sexuality and love for each other. Despite a few minor hiccups, this story is a joy to read, especially for lovers of gay romances.

Julian and Richard have been the best of friends for years, but it isn't until Richard returns from a trip abroad with a wife that Julian realizes what he feels for Richard goes far beyond friendship. Julian is in love with Richard, a man he can never have. While it is torture to be near Richard, Julian cannot stay away.

When Julian learns that his feelings and desire for Richard are reciprocated, the two can barely refrain from consummating their love at once. But, society would scorn them, and what about Richard's wife?

A short passionate tale about friendship and love that is entertaining and romantic. SMOKE SCREEN is a sweet romance blended with a slice of eroticism.
