Vanessa's Choice was a stark picture of the options (or lack thereof) that poverty in America affords people. The main character, living the party life, finds herself in the absolute most desperate of situations. I can't even imagine how she survived and thrived in the aftermath of everything that happens in the book. But, thank goodness she did and has the courage to share her story. I'm glad we'll be treated to part 2!
Overall, it was a quick and relatively easy read. It provides some good lessons for young people, but probably isn't appropriate for anyone under 15 or 16. The situations this woman finds herself in are hard, but you can see her path and how she is thinking about her situation. In some cases (with one of the men she's dating) she does not demand the respect she deserves, but in others (with an old friend) she fiercely defends herself and her family.
