That Mama Is a Grouch
Author: Sherry EllisSherry Ellis

Will anything get a mother yelling about time outs and withholding favors faster than a toy-strewn house? In That Mama is a Grouch by Sherry Ellis, an intelligent and very wise narrator reminds us in charming rhyme that mothers are human, most often loving, and that certain situations will guarantee driving them to their breaking point. The reader is quickly reminded that tripping over toys is one way to guarantee a grouch attack. Children from three to seven will delight in this story of a mommy who's nearly out of control, and they will learn the importance of something as simple as putting away toys. Ms. Ellis does parents a big favor when she reminds all of us that there is humor to be found and something to be learned in even the most everyday circumstances. When nerves are tested, pick up this book and start reading!

Sherry Ellis's That Mama is a Grouch tells a story in rhyme that adults can identify with and children will love. My favorite line, "I had left my toys - all fifty-two - lying on the ground," provides some flavor of Ms. Ellis' sense of humor. But it's not all fun and games, as she helps teach both children and parents lessons about patience, courtesy, and rules. The perfect illustrations set the mood and will entertain readers of all ages. It is obvious why this book won several awards, and I look forward to reading more of her work!

That Mama is a Grouch is a book that my family and I will treasure for ages. It's one of my boys' favorites! They are four years apart (3&7), and can each relate to the topics and messages in this story. The vibrant illustrations and colorful dialogue captures their attention and keeps them interested. It's a wholesome, fun read that speaks to both parents and children. Ellis weaves messages of understanding, compassion and patience into a tale that children can relate to. I highly suggest Sherry's books for the children in your life. -Melissa Kline, author of My Beginning

In Sherry Ellis' delightful book, That Mama is a Grouch; children from age 3-7 will quickly learn that clutter-caused tension in a home can be avoided. In this story, Mama is having a bit of a tantrum over the mess, and the narrator, a precocious child indeed, soon understands all too well. Toys are strewn about as obstacles that can cause falls and short tempers. Mama is tired-tired-tired of cleaning up this constant clutter. In a voice as wise as it is adorable, the narrator reminds children that parents are human, with feelings and moods. At the same time, parents are reminded that children are, well, children!

That Mama is a Grouch book explains why Mama is a grouch she is in need of some quite time, but she isn't having one because her little girl decided to leave all her toys all over the entire house without picking them up after playing. This story is about listening, agreement and conversation between an adult and a child. It teaches and explains to children why it is necessary to clean up their room and pick up their toys and also listen to their parents. I like the illustrations as it helps the reader to understand the frustrations of the mother and the daughter. This book is the Best Book Award Finalist and I highly recommend the parents have a copy to read to their child.

Absolutely Brilliant! My children love this book. The first time me and my daughter read it she went right upstairs to clean her room, and that never happens! I have only had the book 2 days and I have read it about 10 times already, my children can't get enough. Every Mother and child can relate to this book. It is both humorous and delightful and explains both aspects of the typical family household, the messy child and the grouchy mom. I highly recommend this book!

What is one of a mother's worst nightmares in her daily life around the house? A very active little girl, who loves to play, leaves her toys out in the living room, makes a mess in the kitchen at lunchtime, wakes up the baby from his nap with her noise, and even leaves her handprints all over the wall. The Mama, though she loves her daughter dearly, is almost at the end of her rope, threatening time outs and withholding favors. Will the two ever be able to reach some kind of solution that will satisfy both their needs?
Sherry Ellis, who also authored That Baby Woke Me Up, AGAIN!, has produced a humorous story which reminds us not only that mothers are human with feelings too and, well, kids are kids but that clutter-caused tension can be avoided. That Mama Is a Grouch was a USA Book News Best Books Award Finalist. The adorable rhyming text, narrated by the girl, along with the charming illustrations by Don Berry, serve to help children remember that one way to keep their parents from being so grouchy is to be neater, and to encourage parents not to be so grouchy. The next time a situation arises at your house, don't yell. Just read this book!

This review is from: That Mama is a Grouch (Paperback)
Throughout the pages of That Mama Is A Grouch, author Sherry Ellis provides readers with a timely reminder that both children and parents are only human, after all. Of course, if you're a mother constantly tripping over scattered stuffed animals or a child forever getting yelled at for writing on walls - this fact may escape you from time to time; nonetheless, all of us are entitled to a healthy dose of understanding when it comes to our reactions to the everyday activities that transpire within the walls of our home. Adults must understand that children will be children and that the advent of personal responsibility often comes slowly; likewise, children must realize that adults truly have their best interests at heart and are constantly teaching the crucial lessons they must embrace in order to grow and develop in a healthy manner. Both of these cogent points are on salient display in That Mama Is A Grouch, where Ellis takes an ordinary, rather mundane issue and skillfully transmogrifies it into an invaluable life lesson. As a result, readers of all ages are sure to benefit from her subtle, yet powerfully insightful wisdom. A highly recommended instant classic

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for children ages 3-8 who can benefit from learning some of the "rules" of considerate living together, August 17, 2010
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: That Mama is a Grouch (Paperback)
"That Mama is a Grouch" is a lovely children's picture book that explains in both pictures and rhyme, why Mama is a grouch: her adorable child is not cleaning up her mess, being quiet and considerate of baby's naptime, or being respectful of her food or home environment. Some simple rules help to clear the way through strewn toys and messy foods and boisterous activities to make life more pleasant for both Mama and family. An adorable tiny companion mouse helps the child follow cues to become a more self-cleaning model child. "That Mama is a Grouch" is perfect for children ages 3-8 who can benefit from learning some of the "rules" of considerate living together

I recently read "That Mama is a Grouch" by Sherry Ellis to my five-year-old granddaughter Merryn. She thought the book was a real hoot. I had to read it to her twice in one evening. She kept saying, "Look, Abo. It looks just like my house." Merryn has a toddler brother that she frequently wakes up with her exuberant (okay, noisy) playing. Like most children, she enjoys taking the toys out of their trays and spreading them out all over the family room. We had the opportunity to babysit Merryn and her brother last Friday while the parents went out to do some shopping. She was reluctant to pick up the boys until Aba (that's my wife) reminded her about what we had read in "That Mama is a Grouch." Merryn then picked up her toys without any further objections. This is obviously a very desirable byproduct of Sherry Ellis's book. She obviously knows how to deal with young children. Her book examines typical everyday situations. She describes how an understanding mother (who may occasionally sound like a grouch) talks to her young daughter in a constructive manner.

As a children's psycho-therapist I am always seeking ways to explain parent's behavior to children. Sherry Ellis has made my job much easier. In this book a child can relate easily to the rhymed words and friendly pictures that describe common situations that can make mothers angry. It's lovely how the mother in the book takes the little girl onto her lap and talks to her about rules and consequences and feelings. This is a book that models good parenting, as well as teaching young children about rules and their consequences. I would highly recommend this book for children ages 3-8.

That Mama Is a Grouch is a wonderful story that tells a relatable tale of two very important perspectives of a typical day in a toy-strewn house. My daughter and I enjoyed reading this book over and over again! We chuckled at how much the scenes and words were similar to our own. This story reminds parents that our child's creativity is not always complete at clean-up time, and offers a nice conversation starter for a new "agreement" between parents and children regarding the reasons for all those "rules". My daughter loved the story, as well as looking for the cute little mouse that appears on every page. As a Mama, I loved how this story normalizes the chaos that is so common with children in the house. Thank you Sherry Ellis! I highly recommend this book to any Mama!

The first time I read this to my daughter, she gave me a huge hug and then proceeded to have me read it over and over again. I believe we read it a total of 8 times in a row!

The message is delightfully conveyed, illustrations are fun, and the story is relatable to young children. The book not only entertained my child, but lead to a great conversation about rules, and feelings, and how to talk about what is bothering us together. My daughter did assure me, once we had finished our eighth reading that first day, that I myself am not a grouch, which was something that I was quite relieved to hear.
