Author Biography

Samad Beh-Rang (Behrangi) is a writer from Azerbaijan, Iran. Beh-Rang's life and death are shrouded in myth because he spent most of his adult life underground, which leaves a lot for speculation. However, nothing best describes his ideology and teachings as his own works from which one can tell that his short life was very productive indeed. In his works Beh-Rang has addressed such social problems as poverty, ignorance, discrimination, injustice and lack of freedom. Today, these topics are subject of some books and movies, yet very few among them actually offer a solution to those problems.

In an effort to help end social injustice, Beh-Rang does not shield his young readers from learning about realities of life. The Little Black Fish follows a path in his journey to the sea and teaches the readers that no matter how hard the road, how scathing the ridicule or how high the stakes, the goals of freedom and justice can be reached.

A fascinating story for children, The Little Black Fish was written with freedom-fighters and revolutionaries in mind. It is a study of social relations and understanding of human characters, especially when their actions are put to test. It celebrates the eternal desire of humanity to keep searching and moving despite dangers and uncertainties which accompany such endeavors. It highlights the dogma of those who fear change or anything which borders on the unknown and unfamiliar.

Beh-Rang's stories are notable for their realism and social significance and shape the lives of those who read them. In keeping with his desire to combat poverty and ignorance, his stories do not shield children from knowledge about the pain and harshness of life. On the contrary they pay homage to the lives of the majority of the underprivileged strata of the society who continue their struggle to survive both physically and intellectually.

In "An In-Depth Analysis of Pedagogic Deadlock" Samad wrote:

“Children’s literature must build a bridge between the colorful dream world full of fantasy and illusion, and a tougher real world full of twists and turns. The child armed with the torch of knowledge, awareness and guidance must cross this bridge and set foot to the intense harshness of the bigger world.”
