Book Review by Kristen B. (Parent and Human Resources Trainer)
As a parent and a human resources trainer, I found Rita Vetsch's children's book titled, "The Many Colors of Friendship" exceptional and would recommend it to anyone. The wonderful and relevant themes of imagination, diversity, friendship, and acceptance are carried throughout this book for both youth and adults to explore and appreciate.
Vetsch's clever portrayal of a young girl, Katherine, who finds herself lost in a jungle filled with uncertain characters is a timeless picture to paint for young people, and is a story in which many adults can relate. At first Katherine feels scared and does not trust the unknown characters. However, since she is in an unfamiliar place and needs help during certain situations, like falling into quicksand, she suddenly must rely upon these unknown characters. "Just because you have never seen such a creature as me, doesn't mean you have to be scared. I am a friend." is one of my favorite quotes, as often many of my best relationships had to start with risk, trust, and acceptance, similar to the themes carried out through Vetsch's characters.
Vetsch's book portrays a beautiful story that reminds our young people--the future leaders of our world--that they need to take risks to experience, understand, and accept others who are different from them. This story could also serve as a good lesson for adults, as I feel it is relevant in our ever changing workforce and global community.
If you have further questions, I would be delighted to answer them. Thank you for your time and consideration. - Kristen B
