New maid Dorcy Edwards flees the scene of where her employer's body is found. His murder sparks a chain of macabre events. Cloistered on a remote island with five strangers, including Gareth Davenport, her late employer's brooding, but darkly handsome heir, Dorcy encounters baffling questions with what she fears may be terrifying answers. Who cut the telegraph lines? Who left a mutilated animal carcass outside her bedroom door? What is the reason for Gareth's black gloves and eye patch? Can he be "Jack the Ripper", the madman suspected to be Mr. Davenport's killer? Dorcy must solve the mystery, and soon, or her growing attraction for Gareth could be her very death sentence.

It's a foggy night, the mist is slowly falling, and the wind is blowing just enough to make that tree limb outside scratch upon the window by your chair, the chair where you sit, book in hand reading the newest novel by Miss Mae... "See No Evil My Pretty Lady". As you read you wonder , what is that noise I hear.
London, someone is killing the ladies of the evening on the East end of town and it is getting the city in a panic. Arriving from Yorkshire Dorcy Edwards has just acquired a job as kitchen help with a Mr. Davenport. Only being in his hire for 3 days, she walks into the library to find him murdered. Fleeing from the scene, she runs out into the foggy night, only to be attacked by ...the murderer? When she meets up with Gareth Davenport, the son of her now deceased boss, all clues point to him. When his will is read Mr. Davenport has plainly put it that one of the five mentioned in his will could be his murderer as well as the one attacking women. Alice, the cook, Dorcy, the new kitchen help, Gareth, his son, Matthew and Felicity Peabody, close friends of the family. They all had a reason to kill him and are reported to spend a fortnight on Hawkes Island accompanied by a police inspector where the killer would be discovered.
As they all approach the island and the fortress they would call home for a few days, events start to happen, As the fog blankets the island the telegraph lines are cut, the boat is set loose, no way off the island now. As clues point to each one, you may think you have it figured out. But guess again . As the tables turn , more and more as the clues change, you may think you know but do you really. With a surprise ending this book will grab the reader from the first page and hang on to the last. What was that scream you heard in the foggy night....

Miss Mae has a way of writing sweet cozy mysteries that are spellbinding and full of suspense. Chill bump stories. Hold on to that thought as with the sunrise the fog will lift as you reach the final page. I have read all of Miss Mae's books and I have to say See No Evil My Pretty Lady rates right at the top with all the rest of them. Miss Mae ranks right up there with one of my favorite authors Mary Higgins Clark.
