About the Author(s)
MIKE BIGGS began a new focus on writing and walking in faith regarding his career and destiny after serving thirteen years as a media and PR executive in the sports industry, primarily through work with PGA Tour players, managers and events. His career started in 1990 at the PGA of America following graduation from Oklahoma State University. After two-plus years of media relations management at events such as the Ryder Cup Matches and PGA Championship, Mike joined the communications staff of Golden Bear International (GBI) in 1992. GBI (now the Nicklaus Companies) functions as the career management and business entity of legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, where Mike served in a variety of media and PR capacities. Part of his service included PR management of sports management clients such as two-time U.S. Open Champion Lee Janzen and former NFL players Shane Matthews from the University of Florida (Chicago, Carolina, Washington, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Miami) and Steve Everitt from the University of Michigan (Cleveland, Baltimore, Philadelphia). In 1996, Mike moved from South Florida to Dallas and joined Cornerstone Sports which managed the likes of Phil Mickelson, Bob Tway, Larry Nelson, Corey Pavin and Mark Brooks. Following corporate changes in and around the company in 1999, Mike left a year later to establish his own independent firm, Sports Communications Group (SCG). He signed former British Open Champion Justin Leonard as his first client. Soon to follow were contracts with Hambric Sports Management (Tway, Steve Flesch, Harrison Frazar, Bob Estes, Lorena Ochoa and others) and Links Sports (David Toms, Kenny Perry, Chad Campbell and others). He also worked with groups associated with NHL players from the Dallas Stars such as Mike Modano, Derian Hatcher, Marty Turco, Brenden Morrow, Richard Matvichuk and Sergei Zubov. Leaving his full-time sports PR focus to write after answering a call God placed on his heart, Mike began a journey that led through several years of uncertainty and numerous short-term projects in the sports, non-profit and entertainment fields. "Biggsy," as he is known by old and new friends alike, resides in Dallas with his son, Chase. He was born in Northwest Arkansas; grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and lived six years in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, before moving to Texas.
Kathy Biggs is the inspiration of Cottage 12 and resides in a specially equipped residential home in Tulsa, Okla. She was born with a severe case of cerebral palsy in 1964, three years before her brother, Mike. At the age of seven, she was placed in the care of the Cerebral Palsy Center of Norman, Okla., where she remained for a year. In 1972, she was enrolled at Hissom Memorial Center in Sand Springs, Okla., where she would reside for nearly 20 years. Kathy’s influence on those around her has been extraordinary considering her physical and mental limitations. Unable to communicate normally or do much of anything for herself, the peace and joy in her heart is translated through her piercing eyes and infectious smile. |
