Savage Worlds

What would you do for love? That was the question posed by Sheri’s late mother.
Sheri Norbella had everything going for her as an attractive, intelligent, though opinionated young woman of sixteen growing up on Zeslin-A colony. But her life is turned upside down when her father decides to relocate to a distant settlement called Thaden- a world inhabited by less sophisticated peoples. Sheri is the victim of racial insults and attacks that become intolerable when she encounters Velsa A’Gora, Thaden’s most notorious bully. As the two girls clash an inscrutable yet handsome boy, Jaron Loffay, offers to protect Sheri in exchange for her affections. Not trusting his motives she refuses, but the feud escalates beyond a schoolyard drama just as the dreaded Namosene invade. Thaden is evacuated leaving Sheri stranded with Velsa and her clan on a desolate planet. Tempted to give into Jaron’s desire Sheri must weigh her morals against her will to survive. Despite being marooned she unexpectedly discovers the solution to her mother’s riddle while surrounded by cruel strangers on a savage world…

This book is an enjoyable read from start to finish. It is in a science fiction setting, but still manages to do a great job with character growth and development. It doesn't get carried away with technical jargon like some sci-fi books, but plays out a story that you can connect with and you want to find out more about the characters.
This universe includes three humanoid races. Sheri is a teenager of the race that is considered to be the most intelligent and sophisticated. She is forced to move to a planet occupied by the other, in their opinion, more barbaric races. Being an outcast, she has difficulty fitting in. The typical story of a girl finding a tough time fitting in, and being saved by a guy feels like it is approaching. But this is diverted by some serious life-threatening scenarios when she gets in trouble with a tough female bully, and the drama mixes with some serious action. Just as this gets to a boiling point, the serious action hits, with an alien invasion. But the author (Bingamon) avoids getting tangled in simple battle descriptions, and focuses on how the characters cope with the attack, and each other. A testament to their character development truly comes through when they are put into this critical situation, and the choices they make. I felt myself pulling for certain ones, and that they would make some tough decisions, I don't want to pull out any spoilers, but it doesn't play out with a simple, fairy-tale ending.
BIngamon has done a terrific job on this book, and I look forward to reading more from him. This universe he created could pose well as a backdrop for future stories, but he is not just a one dimensional author.
