Molly Westerman comes to the assistance of a neighbor, Shelia Jennings, in late pregnancy and helps with the complicated birth. She faces the threat of wild animals and deals with her step-daughters growing psychosis all the while trying to keep the household functioning and the family safe. Her youngest step-son has a craving for firearms, which gets him in trouble every time he acquires one. Tom Jennings, whose life Molly once saved, has his own problems trying to stay alive and get back to his family unscathed. He is being targeted by outlaws who want to keep him from testifying against a prisoner in Waco.
