Lorin Lee Cary was born in Murphy, N.C. and received his bachelor’s degree from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and his master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Cary has taught at the University of Toledo in Ohio, published numerous historical articles and essays and co-authored two books, No Strength Without Unions: Ohio Workers 1803-1980 and Slavery in North Carolina 1748-1775.
