Author Biography

I’m a former reporter for the Journal Inquirer newspaper, former Women’s eNews correspondent, former APSU (adjunct) English professor, former Clarksville, TN cab driver, editor of American Fiction, and the author of "Homefront" and the short, little book "How to Not Have Children."

My short fiction has been published widely online in journals like Storyglossia, Pindeldyboz, Tryst, Opium, the now-closed edificeWrecked, and others, and in print in Storyglossia, Red Weather Magazine, and RE;AL. “They Three at Once Were One,” the short story of a hotel worker who invades the room of a soldier on leave from Iraq, won the Storyglossia Fiction Prize, was chosen as a work of notable fiction by StorySouth’s MWA, and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Before deciding to devote my writing time to fiction, I took an interest in plays and screenplays. One full-length play (Gun in the Corner) and one one-act (The Girl on the Swing) were produced by Theater of the Invisible Guest, my full-length screenplay Like Cockatoos won the Robert Carothers Distinguished Writers Award, and Martin Jonasen directed the film adaptation of my short story “The Fittest” (first published in Red Weather Magazine), which was later screened at the annual Fargo Film Festival.

I spent two summers (2001, 2002) teaching expressive writing, screenwriting, and play writing at the Trollwood Performing Arts school in Fargo, ND. (Interesting, talented, and impressive students.)

"Homefront," literary fiction, was written a year or so after my husband, a former Army officer and Chinook pilot (among other things), returned from his deployment in Iraq. Through Homefront’s protagonist Mia, readers are deeply immersed in the raw, confusing, angering, passionate, unexpectedly humorous, and intimate experience of waiting for a lover to survive a war.

I’m currently working on my second novel, "The Year of Dan Palace," and editing the literary journal "American Fiction."
