My 32-years in emergency medicine have provided me with a front-row seat at the great American "Medical Miscreant" road show. It has been quite a ride.
From the time I witnessed my very first physician-patient homicide, to the morning we responded to a 911 call - "surgeon throwing scalpels at security staff" I decided keeping a journal might be in order. Fast forward to 2002, when I realized my "journal" was bulging from a dust-covered briefcase in the garage, and lo & behold, nobody seemed to be writing about the flagrant & phenomenal volume of doctors behaving like chimps at a picnic.
It was time,I decided, to shine a penlight into the rarely discussed niches of physician misbehavior.
Does any other profession cause more damage to society?
Might there be a singular pathology to the lunacy?
We consider these - and other questions - everyday. |
