The Missing Piece : Our Search for Security in an Insecure World

Are we truly living our lives? Or are we just coping? Clearly, the world has changed, and continues to change at an ever-accelerating pace. Extraordinarily relevant, and even more so since the disastrous events of September 11, 2001, The Missing Piece is a poignant, honest examination of how each of us seeks to find our own sense of security in what has become a very insecure world.

Beginning with an engaging story about a little boy spending the day with his Grandfather, the author takes us on a journey and through the eyes of the wise elder, leads us to consider what really is important in our lives.

The book examines many different ways (formal education, our relationships, marriage, careers, the accumulation of wealth, etc.) in which we strive to find a certain sense of security. But,for all of our efforts one nagging question remains ... Why is it we never seem to find it?

In the final chapters of the book, the author suggests the possibility of finding something that is of even greater value than the security we long for, in essence, a different missing peace. The book concludes its journey as it revisits the inquisitive grandchild from the story. Now a grown man, he finds himself reflecting on his own life and remembering the words of his Grandfather as he accomplishes what, for him, has been a life-long dream.

Ultimately, The Missing Piece is a book about hope. Filled with real-life examples of the many challenges we face in our daily lives, the priorities we set for ourselves and the choices we make as we seek to find a sense of security, the book reminds us that there is always the possibility, the hope, for a better tomorrow.

Do the lives that we lead REALLY matter? This is a question that I used to ponder often, but have learned over time that our lives are basically a great adventure, with the greatest of adventures being to find our life’s mission. The Missing Piece, and the story of young Billy and his Papa working on a jigsaw puzzle in a cozy cabin on a rainy day, gave me a great visual on how our lives slowly come together over time, revealing a beautiful picture. As long as I’m alive, I can sense that the missing piece in my puzzle, is the next fascinating person, or the next awesome experience that I will get to enjoy, that will help complete the picture and mission of my life. Thank you Bud, for writing such an incredible story and life-lesson. There is indeed hope for a better tomorrow!

Bud provides a useful framework for dealing with life's events that readers of any age will be able to relate to their own lives. In particular, readers of the 'baby boomer' generation will find themselves reading this insightful book with a knowing smile; Bud Boughton's story is their story. Bud's experiences aren't of the shipwreck-survival-harrowing-rescue-from-Everest variety. Rather, they are experiences most of us face as human beings: illness; death; loss; divorce and the challenges of intergenerational relationships. Bud relates his process of growth and the insights that he's developed in a fashion that will help readers make sense of their own networks of relationships and experiences."
