Author Biography

Faith Brynie specializes in science and health. She is the author of 25 books currently in circulation. They include science activity books for children, science fair project books for children and their parents, and her popular 101 Questions series on anatomy and physiology. Her latest book, Brain Sense, a neuroscience book for adults, was released by Amacom in 2009.

She holds a Ph.D. in science education (curriculum and instruction) from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She worked for many years as a writer and project director for the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) in Boulder, where she wrote and developed textbooks, films, slide packages, educational magazines, and other types of learning materials.

Brynie (formerly Faith Hickman) also served as Director of the BSCS Center for Education in Human and Medical Genetics. In that capacity, she directed projects supported by more than $1 million in grants from public and private sources.

While a professor of science education at the University of Colorado, she became a co-founder of the Colorado Alliance for Science, a consortium of schools, businesses, industries, and community groups dedicated to the improvement of science education in Colorado.

At the invitation of the Department of Defense Dependents' Schools (American schools abroad), Brynie served as "Scientist in Residence" in the U. K. For two years, she worked in elementary and middle schools in England and Scotland, assisting with the improvement of the science program--mostly through direct classroom interaction with children and their teachers.

She remained in England when the "Scientist in Residence" program ended and continued to teach in the American schools until 1991, when she left teaching to write full time. Since then she has written and published more than two dozen books and hundreds of articles for newspapers, magazines, and websites. She teaches technical writing to adults and writes the "Brain Sense" blog for Psychology Today.

Brynie now lives and writes in Montana.
