Guide to the release of
familiar Echo’s fragmented
an Evan Hawkins novel.
The mind thinks it's protecting us when it tucks away pieces of who we are. But it's not strong enough to hold them back forever. Everyone has to face the monsters.
...Echo was no exception.

The memories crept up when she least
expected it ...When her mind was
powerless against it, as she slept.
recollection broke through to reality and shattered
the illusions, until there was no more pretending.
She had to face the past, to be done with it.
She had to do it for all of them.
Without breaking the silence, she would not slay
the monsters that taunted and held her hostage
...The memories of terror are silenced by
warriors who’d rise to recognize them.
Echo didn't win the first round, but the last round had yet to be
fought.

-- (NYC) Echo's been in a state of denial for decades, her life has been difficult at best. It shouldn't have taken the winds of change to make her acknowledge but it did. Everyone has their waking point. It's usually their breaking point. Inspired by a dream that won't be shaken; Echo's search through fragmented recollections of family dysfunction and layers of hidden turmoil leads her on a journey to connecting a spirit beaten ragged by the blows of past taunting events. Return with her on this journey that before now she was afraid to remember; haunting events that have been the conduit of a lingering state of depression for too long.
Follow her as she readjusts her eyes to a new reality with its blanks filled-in, the support of her family and friends helps her to purge the toxins within her that have caused her to retreat into a life of patched together fantasy that could never quite be called living. Surviving takes on new meaning, as she meets life head-on, and faces a jaded past
so that she can begin to tear down boundaries put in place which guarded her from the past allowing her the strength to burst into a unfamiliar future.
Echo was an army brat born in Fayetteville North Carolina, transplanted to Harlem NYC, Echo's author Evan Hawkins is no stranger to change. An abuse survivor, she finds purpose in boldly passing on necessary information about abuse to others who may not otherwise be aware of signs, exit strategies, or healing methods.
Finding power in her family and adoring her mother; who taught by example and word to Echo and her relatives the importance of honor, dignity and strength. Evan continues to seek inspiration as well as extend it. Her hope with the release
of Echo's' is to share, inspire, and encourage growth in and out of difficult situations, knowing firsthand that
any experience can be overcome, through acknowledgement of the pain, and the work it takes to self-nurture
one's way to a state of emotional health.
Evan's choice to release Echo's digitally is based on her experience in the digital realm, and a belief that all of
society's experiences will soon be found in the perimeter of digital media. Being an avid participant in the
growth of the internet for the past 12 years, she's watched the expansion of the medium, and believes in the
accessibility of media materials in many forms.
When she was first introduced to the Ning network for instance, she joined many of the writing networks with
enthusiasm but soon found in many cases a necessary amount of intimacy was missing from the experiences in
some of the larger networks. Inspired to fill in the missing element, she launched her network 'Bird's Eye View' at ehawkview.ning.com
to embrace the diverse expressions of creativity in everyone, and ensure members enjoy the nurturing
atmosphere of a community intent to celebrate its members.
She will be giving away coupons for Echo's digital version via a complimentary code, to randomly selected
commenter’s at her network: Birds Eye View at ehawkview.ning.com when it releases in May 2009.
The release of her book via the growing Smashwords.com platform, is influenced by the myriad of e-book
formats Smashwords provides for each book submitted.

Echoing Soul __ Nostalgic Eyes
“In this bright future we cannot forget our past.”
Bob Marley
It was an uncomfortable sultry early August morning; the air felt still;
it was as if the heat surrounded the entire atmosphere; reclaiming every
aspect of the previously comfortable warm misty summer night. The
night before the trees in the back yard swayed as if they were dancing to a
beautiful sexy song. This morning she peeked through the drawn window
shades, the sun was intense. It wasn’t an ordinary early summer morning
sun--the sky was radiant white, and the trees in the yard were motionless.
The intense heat was heavy, yet the heat swooped down across the city.
Echo thought to herself, “This is that ugly weather.” She smiled
remembering where she’d first heard of ugly weather. Echo closed her
eyes as she recalled how she had become acquainted with the expression
from a group of animated young women—she took flight on her
imagination--she was recalling a long past day, when she sat listening to
a group of young women talking about, “Ugly weatha.”
Echo always felt that her memories were scattered and
fragmented—there were complete years of memories that she couldn’t
recall. However, her adolescence and teenaged years are somewhat
clearer than the years when she was younger. There are flashes of
fragmented days in her lifetime. The memories that she did retain were
stored away in her mind and heart; the ones that she used as a point of
reference in her life; the one’s that made it possible for her to tell her
story; in her mind eye she carefully lifts her treasure chest open—beneath
silky and sticky webs and dust. She hadn’t gone to her memory chest for
a while. Echo imagined pulling away more of the sticky, silky webbing
which kept her memories from fading away; kept her vibrant memories in
place despite the fact that they were pulled out and put away over and
over again.
Echo goes deeper, removing the silky webbing as she begins to flow
hypnotically into a splendid nostalgic echoing of memories concerning the
occasion spent in her Harlem neighborhood sitting near a mature group
of animated sister-women on a day just like today—a setting with a
comparable steamy climate. She smiled at the memory of how she was
educated about “Ugly,”-- unpleasant weather, unsightly people and
naughty events. The memory was so vivid—the echoing sounds of soulful
music and laughter wafting meticulously through the circle of friends; the
heat lingering from the afternoon’s radiant sun, which had washed over
the smooth stone of the tenement steps. The steps were now shadowed by
the south-west looming-tall side by side buildings, making the stoop an
invitingly pleasant seat for Echo; the sun heated smooth stone seat
caressed her young firm brown body beneath the thin bright summer
material that she wore.

Animal rights [protection] were on the books before the
rights of children were written into law, but victims of
abuse don’t have to suffer in silence.. The wounds can be
healed-- They should be healed …
