Dundy County Babe

Did you, a first grader tramp a mile to school in deep snow while Jack Frost nipped your nose, fingers, and toes; were so paralyzed with fear the first day of school that you could not talk? Or saved baby jack rabbits from a morbid death after their nest had been destroyed? Were you rescued by a little chick from a possible rattle snake bite? Did you hear your Mama yell "you have sinned against God" when you made a mistake? The author recalls these many childhood experiences including continual verbal abuse which crushed her self-confidence. She lived on a pioneer farm in southwestern Nebraska.

Reader Reviews

Elsieferne V. Stout 12/01/09

Elsieferne Stout's vivid memories of growing up on the Nebraska plains draw the reader into a story of wonder and of pain. Classic cycles of abuse run their course to her life, but do not prevent her from finding joy in good hard work, in learning, and in her natural talents. Eventually, moments of grace and her own stubborn perseverace enable her to forge a successful life in which she finds the respect and affection she was denied by constant criticism and ridicule in her youth. Elsieferne's story offers hope to those who have similiarly suffered. A. S. Bloomington, In.

A heart wretching story of abuse and a deep inner faaith that enables her to over come. Outstanding! W. K. (retired librarian)
