Author Biography

I’m Katie’s Mom by Barbara B. Holdcroft, Ph.D.

The book I’m Katie’s Mom has been released by Vantage Press, Inc., New York. Author Barb Holdcroft addresses this book primarily to parents of the disabled, but this book is a great source of information for anyone involved with Special Needs individuals: teachers, recreational and occupational therapists, nursing staff, and any type of caregiver for the disabled.
The author’s intent in writing this book is to offer encouragement and advice to anyone who assists those with special needs, while also offering help toward developing a balanced lifestyle. Although the specific needs of the disabled individual are certainly of primary importance, the needs of the parents and other family members should also be taken into consideration. Dr. Holdcroft feels that, while this is a great challenge, it can also prove to be a very positive experience.
Each individual chapter addresses a specific situation from which the author learned new information and techniques for special needs parenting. This knowledge is passed on to the reader, and is often augmented by an excerpt from Katie who shares related events from her life.
Barbara Holdcroft holds bachelors and masters degrees in both education and theology, and earned her doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Toledo. Dr. Holdcroft teaches courses in educational psychology at the University of Toledo, developmental psychology courses at Terra Community College, and courses in theology at Lourdes College. She and her family enjoy skiing, hiking, tennis and relaxing in the mountains of North Carolina. They live in Maumee, Ohio.

bcomquest -- I am glad that you enjoyed it! I would be interested in hearing of your ideas for further marketing, or groups who might enjoy this book. Additionally, I am available to speak at in-service workshops for those working with special needs individuals or parents of the disabled.

In late June, Katie competed in the Ohio Special Olympics at Columbus.  She came home with a Silver Medal and a Bronze Medal in her freestyle and her backstroke - both 50 meters.  Even though we are very proud that she did NOT DQ, it was comforting that there were only three swimmers in each of her events.  In other words, as long as she swam correctly, she was guaranteed a medal.  I'm not sure she realized it, but the pressure was off! Katie also spent a week at St. Fr
