Dear Armineh,
I could'nt stop reading your fascinating book about Iran and Khomeni's reign of terror. You succeeded to insert into the plot much of Iran's history- from Muzadek and the Shah to the Khomeni revolution.
As a woman I was much upset by the treatment of Irani women.
I am looking forward to your new book with great interest.

This book was different from any I’ve read. I had no idea the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini was backed by the United States. How naïve we were in believing he would be an ally like the Shah of Iran had been. Nor did I realize how westernized the country had become prior to the Shah’s fall from power. That was eye opening for me.
I had trouble identifying at first with General Farhad Shirazi. I saw him as a spoiled rich boy; who played at being a soldier, got himself promoted in the Shah’s army, married his beautiful neighbor even though he loved another. He was not someone I could relate to. I could not feel empathy for him. Then I read on.
I do not know how he stood being in captivity for so long. I would have gone mad. I finally understood his desire to escape and feel freedom and I worried that he would not get safely back to his hideout. I watched his love for his wife grow and could see that she and his children were the most important things in his life.
A good writer can make you change your opinion of their characters. This is something Armineh Ohanian does well. I could see the sights and hear the sounds on the streets. I could sense the fear of Shirazi when he realized he’d made a mistake. I felt the frustration of Leyla at being ripped off by supposed guides while trying to secure safe passage out of Iran.
The tension develops and engages the reader on many different levels. I am so grateful that she let me read her book. If you are looking for a fresh look at Iran in the years after the fall of the Shah, this is one book you should read.
