Author Biography


Ann Hodgman is the author of over 40 childrens' books, several humor books, and three cookbooks: Beat This!, Beat That!, and One Bite Won't Kill You. She has also written articles for The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, the Atlantic Monthly, Gourmet, Food & Wine, Smithsonian, and just about all the women's and parenting magazines. Hodgman was Spy magazine's original food columnist and has written regular humor columns for Eating Well magazine and for Salon.com; she regularly writes about food and kids for Wondertime magazine. Her Spy piece on taste-testing dogfood was included in Best American Essays, 1990 and brought her an appearance on "The Tonight Show." An excerpt from One Bite Won't Kill You was included in Best American Foodwriting, 2000.
Hodgman was an editor for Nickelodeon Online from its inception through 1996, reviewed movies for Hotwired, and reviewed TV for EW.com. In the 1980s she worked on many nationally distributed parodies, including Off the Wall St. Journal; The Reagan Report; and Playboy: The Parody. During that time she was also a children's book editor at Bantam. In college she was an editor of the Harvard Lampoon. As a high-school sophomore, she was named Seventeen Magazine's "Teen Gourmet of the Year."
With Lisa Birnbach and Patty Marx, Hodgman has co-authored 1003 Great Things About Getting Old and several other books in the 1,003 series. In September 2007, her newest children's book-a memoir about her pets-was published by Holt; its sequel will be published in 2009. Hodgman taught a one-room Sunday School for a decade and is an ice-hockey goalie. She worked as a chocolatier until her husband disocvered that each box she sold cost $66. She lives in Washington, Connecticut with her husband and many pets, and she is the parent of two adult children.
