Elemental : The Power of Illuminated Love

ELEMENTAL: The Power of Illuminated Love is the product of two individuals¿ combined creative and spiritual visions. It features some 64 paintings by celebrated artist Luther E. Vann with more than approximately 50 accompanying poems and two essays by award-winning author Aberjhani. The art, spanning the early 1970s to 2007, expresses Vann¿s perception of spiritual principles active in the personal and pubic lives of people in New York and Savannah. Introductory essays comment on Vann¿s life and his art. The poems complement the art with themes that explore issues like war, homelessness, the nature of love, and expanded spiritual consciousness.

The Beauty of Poetry and Art

Elemental is an excellent collaboration between poet and artist. Aberjhani constructs beautiful visions through the creative task of placing words in a most prosaic way while Vann treats us with "eye candy" through the medium of art. Each compliments the other in a most gratifying way.

Reading Aberjhani's poems will leave you swimming in thoughts of completeness. To see and hear the voice of another human being express such quality of life, such peacefulness in thought, such pride in character is beyond words. I found upon reading his poems a smile would spread across my face without my realizing that the action had occurred. It's a true sign to the talent and gift he has when it comes to constructing words in such a way that leaves you feeling like a certain thirst has been quenched. Reading Aberjhani's poems is to feel the heart expand bigger and bigger, almost to the point of "bursting like a pod full of promise". It is a validation to the simple task of being human, of feeling love in small spaces, in odd and familiar places, in dreams and in thoughts. He will leave you inspired as he has done me!

As for the magnificent work of Mr. Luther E. Vann, I simply say this: What a joy! The strokes of his brush have a story to tell and how lucky am I to be there to be on the receiving end "listening" to that story. There is something for everyone in his artwork. There is jazz, blues, life perspectives, sprinkles of times past, the Harlem Renaissance, memoirs and emotions galore.

I can honestly say that my life had been enriched that much more for having had this book during the course of my "travels". Now excuse me while I go and rediscover this treasure yet another time.....

"Elemental: The Power of Illuminated Love is the kind of book one places carefully on the coffee table, inviting visit after visit after visit, over time creating a bond. In some 140 pages, on thick, glossy paper that bring sensual pleasure in turning them for new discoveries, I found not only the expected poetry of Aberjhani, but also more than 60 vibrant art reproductions by artist, Luther E. Vann. Now, this was new to me. I relished the additional discovery. Even as I read the lush work of the poet, the corresponding reproductions reflected the words in yet another medium. The artist Vann works in paint that resembles colored fire—the kind that one knocks one’s head back to gaze upon in the night sky on Independence Day. Fireworks, nearly liquid fire, in every blazing color and few of them muted, but pure, in shivering and shimmering lines..."
Zinta Aistars, The Smoking Poet

“A beautiful book…the reproductions of the paintings are outstanding. The poems were inspired by the paintings, and make perfect companions for the reproductions… Elemental is a real delight and was definitely worth the wait.”

--News Editor Linda Sickler of Connect Savannah

“Vann succeeds because he has a subject––the life observed in houses, on the streets and in the parks of his city––and a technique he has made his own…”

--Art Critic and Painter Bertha Husband

“A wondrously amazing book... I see the universal mind in both the paintings and poetry of Elemental. The ‘universal mind’ is always multi-dimensional––there is always the physical and the spiritual. The book has fusion of here and otherworldliness.”
